In a tank water heater, calcium settles to the bottom and bakes into a hard crust over the burner or around the lower element. The heater has to run longer to push heat through that insulating layer, so recovery slows and energy use climbs. You will hear the popping and rumbling of steam bubbles escaping through the sediment bed. How a water softener works

A conventional softener is an ion exchange machine. Water enters a resin tank filled with small polystyrene beads that carry a sodium or potassium charge. Eventually the resin fills up. The control valve then runs a regeneration cycle: it draws brine from the salt tank, flushes the accumulated hardness off the resin, rinses, and sends that waste to a floor drain. Older timer valves regenerate on a fixed schedule whether the resin is loaded or not. Modern metered or demand-initiated valves regenerate only after a measured volume of water has passed, which is why they use noticeably less salt and water. Sizing a softener for your household

Sizing is arithmetic, not guesswork. Take the number of people in the home, multiply by about 75 gallons of daily use per person, then multiply by your grains per gallon. Oversizing is not free. A unit that is far too large regenerates rarely, the resin bed channels, and the water starts to smell stale. Salt-based, salt-free, and dual tank options

What installation involves

A softener needs three things at the install location: the incoming cold water main downstream of the meter, a drain for regeneration discharge, and a standard electrical outlet.
